7 Common Raw Feeding Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Fresh feeding isn't complicated once you understand the fundamentals—but a few predictable mistakes trip up almost every beginner. Here's what to watch for.

1. Skipping the transition

Switching cold-turkey from kibble to raw often causes loose stools. Ease in over several days to a couple of weeks depending on your dog's digestion.

2. Ignoring organ meat

Muscle meat and bone alone aren't balanced. Without secreting organs—especially liver—dogs miss essential micronutrients. The 10% organ portion isn't optional.

3. Too much bone (or too little)

Bone content shows up in the stool fast. Chalky, hard stools mean too much bone; loose stools can mean too little. Aim for firm and well-formed.

4. Feeding a single protein forever

Variety broadens nutrition and reduces the odds of developing sensitivities. Rotate proteins once your dog is settled.

5. Feeding cooked bones

Never. Cooked bone splinters. Only raw edible bone is safe.

6. Guessing at portions

Eyeballing leads to slow weight creep—up or down. Start from a calorie estimate and adjust to your dog's body condition. Our calorie calculator gives you a baseline in seconds.

7. Poor food safety

Raw meat deserves the same handling respect as it does in your own kitchen: clean surfaces, washed bowls, proper thawing, and sensible storage.

Getting the ratios right is the part most people struggle with—which is exactly why we built the FreshFed Feeding System.
