The most common question new raw feeders ask is also the most important: how much do I actually put in the bowl? Feed too little and your dog loses condition; too much and the weight creeps on. Here are two dependable ways to land in the right range.
Method 1: Percentage of body weight
A common rule of thumb is to feed an adult dog 2–3% of its ideal adult body weight per day. Start around 2.5% and adjust:
- Losing weight or too lean? Nudge up toward 3%.
- Gaining weight? Ease down toward 2%.
Puppies need much more — often 5–10% of their current weight — because they're growing fast.
Method 2: Calorie-based
The more precise method uses your dog's daily calorie needs, calculated from body weight and activity level. This accounts for whether your dog is a couch companion or a trail runner. Our free Dog Calorie Calculator does this math for you and even estimates the daily food weight.
Then watch the dog, not the scale
Numbers get you close; your dog's body tells you the rest. You should be able to feel ribs easily without pressing, see a waist from above, and see a tuck from the side. Re-check every few weeks and adjust by small amounts.
Once you've dialed in the starting number, the FreshFed Feeding System tracks weight trends over time so you can see whether your portions are working — not just guess.
