How to Transition Your Dog to Raw Food

The switch to raw is where a lot of people get nervous — usually because they've heard horror stories about upset stomachs. The truth is, a calm, sensible transition almost always goes smoothly.

Two ways to transition

The clean switch: most healthy adult dogs do best with an abrupt change — finish the kibble, start raw the next day. Dogs digest raw and kibble at different rates, so mixing them isn't always ideal.

The gradual switch: for sensitive dogs, seniors, or anxious owners, ease in over 7–10 days, starting with a single, lean protein like chicken or turkey before adding variety.

Start simple, then build

Begin with one protein for the first week or two. Once stools are firm and consistent, introduce a second protein, then organ, then bone-in cuts. Adding everything at once makes it impossible to know what caused a reaction.

The gentle-start option

Some people begin with a short goat milk fast to give the gut a reset before the first raw meal. Raw goat milk is gentle, hydrating, and rich in enzymes — a soft on-ramp for touchy tummies.

Expect some changes

Smaller, firmer stools are normal and a good sign. A little digestive adjustment in the first few days is common. If anything seems severe or persistent, pause and check with your vet.
